The Smokin’ Section traveled by ferry for a memorable Sunday wedding and reception at the Fire Island Hotel. Moira and her sister in law Lisa (of Jaffe Events) are both event planners. Lisa had been at a Smokin’ Section party before and knew we would add just the right touch for Moira and Steven’s special day.

It had been raining much of the Friday and Saturday preceding the big day, and we received a report from Lisa on Saturday that the tent where Moira and Steven’s wedding reception was to take place seemed to be in danger of collapsing! Torrential downpours were taking place on our way over to the ferry and we wondered how the ceremony planned for the beach could possibly take place there. Miraculously, the skies cleared and the sun came out midway through the band’s ferry ride over to Fire Island.

Moira and Steven’s ceremony took place on the beachfront just adjacent to the Hotel’s property. The sun was completely & brilliantly out as the guests were seated for the ceremony and at that point it felt like summer again. An “unplugged” contingent of the Smokin’ Section featuring acoustic guitar and saxophone had been chosen to provide the music for the ceremony. The bridal party, parents and the bride and groom came down the “aisle” to the strains of the duo’s version of the Beatles classic “In My Life”. It made for an unforgettable picture with the rabbi and the joyous couple silhouetted under the chuppah in front of an amazing view of the sea.

After the rabbi pronounced Steven and Moira’s marriage official they came back up the beach to “Simantov and Mazeltov” and the festivities moved into the tent just outside the Hotel for the reception. Lisa had put together the decorations for the affair with a hip, casual yet elegant, almost cocktail party vibe featuring goldfish bowls of jellybeans and other goodies on tables throughout the tent.

Hora time!!!

Almost an hour into the party, Steven and Moira danced their first dance to the full Smokin’ Section band’s version of Dean Martin’s arrangement of “Just In Time” (featuring Mikey Del on vocals and our horn section). The band mixed things up throughout the party from swing & fox trots to classic rock to funk & disco and the guests seemed to enjoy everything we played.  Throughout the reception, the band’s sound was ably handled by Caramel Event & Runway Production.

Towards the end of the reception, the crowd enjoyed a particularly wild Hora and there was nonstop dancing to the end. Just as the reception ended, it started drizzling again. This did nothing to dampen the guests’ spirits as they moved inside to the hotel bar for more partying.
