Heavy rain had been predicted for the Jersey Shore area for the night of Laura and Adam’s wedding reception. However, the prognosticators turned out to be wrong and the couple and their guests got to enjoy a great view of the Navesink River on a perfect evening at the Poolhouse of the Rumson Country Club. Beforehand, our trumpeter had supplied music for their ceremony at church. When the guests arrived at the poolhouse our trio of trumpet, piano and bass got things off to the right start poolside. For their first dance, Laura and Adam chose Al Green’s ’70s Soul Music classic “Let’s Stay Together”.

Laura and her father then danced to “The Way You Look Tonight” and Adam and his mother countered with our version of Rascal Flatts’ “My Wish”. Laura’s father gave a heartfelt welcome speech to ease everybody in to the proceedings.

Those who wanted to enjoy the view could check out the Navesink from the deck of the poolhouse, but most in the crowd chose to stay inside and dance. Early on, Motown got the guests up on their feet.

After the people enjoyed their entrees, a dash of classic reggae (our version of Bob Marley’s “Is This Love?”) eased the bride and groom and many of their guests back onto the dance floor. Things heated up from there with some classic rock and soul music.

- Laura and her mom getting into it!
It was great catching up on things with Laura’s friend Stephanie and her mom Stevie. The Smokin’ Section had the privilege of playing Stephanie and her husband John’s wedding reception nearby at the Rumson CC clubhouse the previous November.

In our last set, the band played a special request from Adam, Eddie Money’s “Take Me Home Tonight” which we had learned specially for this party. The crowd definitely seemed to approve!

As always, Louise Conover and Alexandra Passage of Therese Marie Wagner Photography caught some very unique, candid and exciting moments at the reception and they also worked smoothly in tandem with Michael Simons Videography.

Towards the end of the last set, we played a special request from the bride’s father, the party classic originally done by the Iseley Brothers, “Shout”! It proved to be the right call, as everyone (both the dancers and the band) got worked up.
